Hello everyone,

I am looking for the SOURCE of these two quotes:

"Wagner is long dead and buried, as is the Third Reich. If Wagner
wrote great music, as I think he did, why should we not embrace (his
music) fully and be nourished by it."

"Hate him [Wagner] on bended knee."

Can anyone here tell me the exact citation, source, book, article,
where these appear and who said them?

Thank you,

The other quote, "Hate him [Wagner] on bended knee" is also Leonard
Bernstein.

He said something like, "I hate him, but on bended knee", in one of
his "Young Persons Concerts" TV broadcasts. There's probably a book
based on the scripts for those shows, so you might be able to find the
original version in that book.

However, if you'll settle for an indirect quotation, I can provide
this:

"With Friedelind Wagner as his guide, he [Bernstein] had finally made
a sort of peace with the man he had hated for so long - but hated, as
he put it, on bended knee."

Burton, Humphrey, _Leonard Bernstein_, Doubleday, New York, 1994, pp
513-514.

Cheers!

Dunno whether such a book exists, but the shows themselves (if not
all, at least a rather large number of them) were released on video
some years back. So I suppose someone with a lot of time on their
hands could view them all, watching for that particular quote, and
report back ...

I believe the second quote is also Bernstein, quoted in one of his
biographies. Sorry I can't be any more specific.

I am fairly sure that Leonard Bernstein was also the source of the
second quote. I can't be completely sure, but apparently it occurred
on a television broadcast. The same query was also made on this site,
which you may find pertinent:

Interesting, to read these comments by "Lenny", as just this weekend I had
read a quote by him "Life without music is unthinkable, music without life
is academic. That is why my contact with music is a total embrace."

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your responses. I was trying to help someone locate
these quotes and even though I am familiar with them generally I
wasn't sure where to find them.

Thanks again,

Janice Rosen
