Discussion:
Which Meistersinger? Kna or Furtwangler?

I'm wondering about which of two Meistersingers to buy.

The first is the 1951 Knappertsbusch studio recording.

The other is the Furtwangler live recording.

Any comments on which one is preferable? I know the Furtwangler is
less-than-complete, but I also know that Kna was not at his best in the studio.
Does that make it a wash?

Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to say. They both are worth hearing but neither of them is
perfect. It's true that Kna wasn't at his best in the studio. However,
this recording has certain charm. Furtwängler's recording is better
conducted. The problem is that it's not complete. Most of all, the
quintet is missing. They both have interesting singers. Schöffler and
Prohaska are both good but Schöffler is better. Lorenz is a better
singer than Treptow but not quite at his best. Both are very good
though. Greindl is a much better Pogner than Edelmann. Müller is
better than Güden.
I guess I prefer Furtwängler, especially if you already have some
other Kna Meistersinger (1960 is my favorite). Buy Furtwängler now and
maybe Knappertsbusch later.

Personally, I have to say that, although I view Furtwaengler's
conducting as usually the finest of all, and this Meistersinger as no
exception to that, Furtwaengler's cast here still strikes me as so
dreary and the missing sections are always such a jolt that ultimately
this set doesn't even rate, IMO. I would take the '51 Kna instead.

Moreover, I don't view the '51 Kna as somehow a compromise, since with
its wonderful cast and Kna in masterly form, IMO, this set is now, for
me, one of the top three Meistersingers in the discography out of well
over thirty, I believe, anyway. It would be well worth having even if
you had no set at all yet!

Not sure if some here might still find this useful, but I put up a few
thoughts of mine on the top rung of Meistersinger recordings -- IMO,
admittedly. It's at

So is the schmuck who posted it. The idiot resurrects a 15 year old topic and then gives a link which has nothing to do with the question. I understand he needs attention but this is ridiculous,.
