Interesting. I've heard 1960 and 1962, and this looks like something of a hodgepodge cast (multiple Wotans, multiple Brunnhildes) - other than Crespin and Milligan, and what will presumably be decent sound, what's the attraction?

BTW, speaking of Kempe, his Dresden Meistersinger is due for release shortly:

The attraction is this is only "official" Ring recording conducted by Kempe, remastered by master tapes. The Testament recording form ROCG was remastered from an off-air recording.

Anyone heard this yet?

But features Hotter in reasonably good voice, and a generally stronger cast than the 1961 Bayreuth.

BTW, this Testament set of the '57 ROH cycle is on sale at Berkshire.

Finally getting around to listening to this 13CD box, purchased from Presto last month. Kempe was always an underrated conductor in general, IMO, and no more especially than in Wagner. His only Ring I've previously heard was the sonically constricted 1957 mono Covent Garden on Testament. I couldn't make it through more than Die Valkyrie, but this 1961 mono cycle is altogether different. First, it is entirely listenable and with a natural soundstage. Listening to Siegfried now and only Fafner has been anything less than exemplary from an engineering standpoint. The casting for this opera is good. Hans Hopf's Siegfried has grown on me. Whatever he may lack in the most scintillating of voices he makes up for in a very human, virile yet empathetic portrayal of the hero. Btw, Nilsson is Bruennhilde for the Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods, but not Valkyrie (Astrid Varnay, for some reason). So far, so good. Anyone else have this:

<< “Just about everything is too loud” was the watchword of Rudolf Kempe in Ring-conducting most aware of (and capable of realising) the subtlest dynamic gradations. It was also highly drama-conscious, held divergent acts (Walküre’s second) together like a vice, and fielded the widest colour palette (his Fire Music is tangibly different everywhere it occurs). All this was known from his 1950s Covent Garden work (a quality 1957 cycle can be privately sourced) but, regrettably, Kempe’s most accessible Ring on disc (Bayreuth, 1960) was not well cast. Only after unrealised Wotan performances (Hermann Uhde/Jerome Hines) and an off-form Siegmund and Sieglinde comes some measure of vocal security from Nilsson’s Brünnhilde and Hans Hopf’s surprisingly malleable Siegfried. But the hand of a master conductor can be heard in every scene with Kempe’s old sparring partner Otakar Kraus as Alberich, or in Walküre with Astrid Varnay, and throughout the first two acts of Siegfried and the first of Götterdämmerung.
